"Crosscut: Stories of the mills, logging and life on the Androscoggin"
Speaker:
Rebecca Rule
In this one-hour spoken documentary, Rebecca Rule tells the story of logging and papermaking in Berlin through the first hand accounts of people who lived it. The stories were among those collected for the Telling Our Stories Project in 2007, sponsored by the Androscoggin Valley Community Partners and funded by the NH State Council on the Arts, the NH Humanities Council, and Public Service of NH. They sample the life and culture of a unique place and time. “More has been left out than could be included,” Rebecca Rule says. “It is my hope that others will continue to explore this deep well of North Country history through its stories.”

Speaker: Jeff Warner
Please join us for an evening with Jeff Warner performing
“Banjos, Bones, and Ballads.” This program is made possible
through a grant from the Humanities On The Go Program from the
NH Humanities Council. Jeff Warner includes traditional songs,
rich in local history and a sense of place. His folk music helps
us interpret present-day life while instilling an understanding
of the working people who built our country. Tavern songs, banjo
tunes, 18th century New England hymns, sailor songs, and
humorous stories about traditional singers and their songs
highlight this informative program.

"An Intimate Portrait of Amherst Civil War Soldier, Charles H. Phelps"
Speaker:
Bob Korkuc
Almost 150 years ago on July 23, 1863 at the Congregational
Church of Amherst, family and friends met to honor Charles H.
Phelps at his funeral mass. Not since that day, have so many
gathered to pay respects to this fallen son of Amherst. Bob
Korkuc, author, historian and resident of Amherst will bring
Charles Phelps alive so that he can speak to us. Through letters
he wrote home to his sister, Sophia E. Phelps, over the period
of October of 1861 through April of 1863, Charles will reveal
his wartime experiences as he served for the Fifth New Hampshire
Volunteer Regiment for the Union Army during the Civil War.
With fascinating candor, Charles reveals his baptism under fire
when he fought at the Battle of Fair Oaks during the Peninsula
Campaign in June of 1862. Additionally others from the “Fighting
Fifth” will help us understand what Phelps experienced at the
bloody battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg. Finally, near a
wheatfield in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, soldiers from the Fifth
New Hampshire—George Gove, Charles A. Hale, and Amherst resident
and 5th NH Colonel Charles E. Hapgood—will provide
insights on Charles Phelps’ last noble act in battle. Lastly, we
will gain an appreciation for how the Town of Amherst mourned
the loss of this Civil War hero.
