Description |
Photographic portrait of Abigail Atherton Kent Means (Mrs. Robert Means, Jr.; b.1802, d. 1857)
This ambrotype photograph was taken in 1852 when she was 50 years old. It is in a case just like the ones used for daguerreotypes. In the back of the case is written, "Abigail Kent Means, Lowell, Mass. 1852." There is a slip of paper with the photograph that says, "To my dearest Jane. Your affectionate friend. A.A. Means." The "Jane" is Jane Means Appleton Pierce.
Abby Means owned the Col. Robert Means house from 1842 to 1857 and served as the surrogate first lady in the Pierce White House for the first two years of Franklin Pierce's term. |
